Hendersonville, Tennessee

Sorry folks for this post being delayed several months- life got the way

We packed up and left Grand Ole RV Resort, dropping the RV off at its enclosed parking spot just north of White House. So here we are, we’ve moved into our new home. We have a bed and three easy chairs now , originally had a bed and two camping chairs. About a week after we moved in we received the three easy chairs and a TV. We borrowed a coffee maker , 2 forks, spoons and a butter knife from the RV. We planned on eating microwave meals for a couple of days until our movers arrive.

Our furniture and other belongings were packed up and put on a moving van exactly one month ago. We were told our goods would arrive between April 1 and April 7. That was fine with us and we timed our journey from Reno to Hendersonville accordingly. Well, we arrived on time but our moving van didn’t.

Hendersonville touts itself as the “City by the Lake” bu I must confess that there are many towns on the lake in this area. The Cumberland River separates Hendersonville from Green Hill, Mt. Juliett and other towns. It’s also known as Old Hickory Lake as there is a small dam to form the long, narrow lake.

Johnny and June Carter Cash’s grave surrounded by graves of his band members.

Nashville is about 20 miles to the south. As one would expect quite a few country western recording stars live or lived here. One name everyone will recognize is Johnny Cash who lived, died and is buried here in Hendersonville- along with his band!

We live in a community named Mansker Farms. Not too far away is Mansker Creek. There’s an industrial park named Mansker. So this Mansker fella must be historically significant. So exactly who is this Kasper Mansker fella?

Kasper Mansker was of German heritage making a living “long hunting”- hunting for long periods of time for fur bearing animals. He traveled from Georgia to the Mississippi.

In early 1780, Mansker signed the Cumberland Compact, an agreement providing for the first government in the new settlements. The compact set up the Cumberland Association, a local governing body comprised of representatives from the various forts. Mansker’s Fort was one of those designated for representation.

Mansker was an Indian fighter during the Indian wars, an officer in the Militia, built a fort for protection from the Indians, a statesman and a man that provides an escort service for new arrivals to the region. He is buried near Mansker Creek.

Located in our community are three pioneer cemeteries, one for the Saunders, one for the Moores and off a ways for the farm family Shannon. History is everywhere here in Middle Tennessee, including our own development

We have a vision of how our new home should look and how we can better make it more old timer friendly. So over the net few months that’s what we will be working on.

Still waiting for our furniture…… sigh
